Golden Ceremonial Lion- Eye Dotting Ceremony- An Article by Mr Russell Suthern Chief Instructor WCMA

Those students who made the effort to come to the Easter Saturday Kung Fu class were lucky to receive a real treat!

They were witness to the ceremonial breathing of life into the new Lion, and its first dance as we celebrated its birth into this world.

I drummed. Talin did a great job with the cymballing and Jason sweated it out manfully as the Lion’s rear end. Special mention however must go to Shaf who performed her first Lion Dance as the head of the Lion. Very few Martial Arts clubs perform Lion Dance. Within these troops, most of the dancers are male. So female Lion dancers, especially in the tough and demanding role of the Lion’s head, are extremely few and far between! I was extremely proud to see Shaf bringing the Lion to life with her expert movements.

The Lion itself was a beautiful sight, a riot of red and gold, extremely lucky colours!

I was especially pleased that Talin had brought two of her Peacehaven students to class; Louisa and Rachael. As they were fairly new students, and it was their first visit to the Main Hall, their visit was made doubly exciting by witnessing their first Lion Dance.

I am sure this new Lion will bring much luck and good fortune to WCMA and all those who see it dance in the future.
